Joy Persevering: The Ray and Ruth Bozeman Story of Living in the Better Way of Jesus
A couple of years ago, I began thinking about writing a book about the life of Ray and Ruth Bozeman, long-time pillars of Gateway and followers of Christ through great difficulties and surpassing joy. Ray and Ruth have been an encouragement to so many who have known them and to the thousands of people who have come through Gateway over the years. Ray was a Navy sailor in World War II and Ruth, after contracting polio as a young wife and mother in 1952, went on to triumph over her circumstances through her faith in Christ and the help of Ray. Together, they have lived for Jesus and loved one another in unusual ways.

The theme of the book comes out of Romans 5:1-5, which says, “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” When I think of Ray and Ruth, this is the passage that comes to mind and it also helped organize the content of the book. Their faith is in Christ and because of that, they were able to rejoice even in their sufferings as endurance, character, and hope was produced in their lives.

The book was written in a way that it would be accessible to all and at around 100 pages, it won’t be a long read. It is a story of faith, suffering, God’s grace, and what a Biblical Marriage actually looks like when it is based in the sacrificial love of Christ. My hope is that young married couples and young families can learn from this example of a couple trusting God in the midst of difficulty as they experience the reward of persevering in joy.
